Anhui University of traditional Chinese medicine was founded in 1959. Its predecessor was the Anhui advanced course of traditional Chinese medicine founded in 1952. In 1959, Anhui provincial government officially approved the establishment of Anhui College of traditional Chinese medicine. In 1970, Anhui College of traditional Chinese medicine was incorporated into Anhui Medical College. In 1975, the Ministry of Education approved the restoration of Anhui College of traditional Chinese medicine. In 2000, Anhui Medical School was incorporated into Anhui College of traditional Chinese medicine. In 2011, the provincial government approved the establishment of Anhui College of traditional Chinese medicine on the basis of Anhui College of traditional Chinese medicine. In 2013, the Ministry of education agreed to rename Anhui University of traditional Chinese medicine as Anhui University of traditional Chinese medicine.

The university is the national clinical research base of traditional Chinese medicine, the national international cooperation base of traditional Chinese medicine, the national clinical research base of drugs, the national doctoral authorization unit, and the test exemption unit recommended by master students.
